THOUGHTS FOR REFLECTION
God calls His disciples to choose the greatest good, the long-term benefit, to fast before we feast. Archbishop Fulton Sheen once said: “Never forget that there are only two philosophies to rule your life: the one of the cross, which starts with the fast and ends with the feast. The other of Satan, which starts with the feast and ends with the headache.”
What can you fast from today that will make it possible for you to feast later in your spiritual life? What small actions can you take every day to grow in faith? I am a firm believer that where you put your focus is where you end up in life. If you’re driving a car and you mistakenly focus on the wall in a long tunnel and not on the road in front of you, well, you’re going to slam into that wall. In the same way, we should wake every day with the intention of putting aside something that doesn’t help us grow closer to Christ and our goal of heaven. When you begin to focus on the longer-term benefits of growing in faith, guess what? You’ll start doing just that. I think that one of our greatest failings isn’t that we’re bad people or that we do bad things, but that we forget very easily to keep focused on our ultimate goal of heaven and the discipline of doing more good things. It’s easy to make a commitment to change your life. It’s another thing to remember to pray for God’s gift of grace so you will stick to that commitment with fortitude. So keep that in mind when you wake up every morning. By remembering, disciplining yourself to journey deeper into your faith, then you will be more effective in helping yourself and others come home to Christ.
